Job Tip #103: Inquiring About a Job Generally vs Specific

by Stand-By Personnel Staff

How many times have you attended a job fair and the company asks you "So, what type of position or job are you looking for?" And you say..."Oh, I dunno. Anything really, I just need a job."? Really?

It's time to think about how bad you REALLY want a job.

Example, let's say there's a song you really, really, REALLY love. And you're trying to find this song on the internet because you want to buy the single. When you search for the song...do you search "any song"? No, you don't. You search either the artist OR the title of the song, otherwise, you won't find the song you're looking for. In other words, you're specific.

Finding a job you want and are qualified to do is the same way. You must be specific when discussing your job search with potential employers.  So, we recommend you pick one to three jobs that you have the most experience in and write them down on a piece of paper, in the order of the one you want or like the most. And when you're searching online for a job, look at that list and apply specifically for one of those positions. When you attend job fairs and you're asked, "what type of job are you seeking?" You'll know how to answer that question. You'll not only come across as organized and someone who knows what they want, but you'll make it easier on the potential employer to find and place you in a job you want and will be happy with. Good luck on your job search...cheers!
