Job Seeker Tip of the Week: Make it Win-Win Situation!

Make It a Win-Win Situation!

by Stand-By Personnel Staff Member

Okay, so, you're looking for a job. This time, you really, REALLY do want and need to find one! Where do you start? Do you just call the number on the ad you saw in the paper or call a staffing company and say "I'm calling in available" and expect a positive outcome? Sometimes it works, but, let's simplify your job search and increase your opportunities and chances of being hired.

We're going to use the "Do's" and "Don'ts" examples.

DON'T

Job Seeker: "Hi, this is Jane Doe, I'm calling in available"

Job Interviewer: "What's the last four of your social?"
Job Seeker: "1234"
Job Interviewer: "Okay Jane, we've got you down as available. If something comes up, we'll let you know."
Job Seeker: "Okay, thanks."

And right about now, the job seeker is thinking "I hope they find something." But, the call never comes, or maybe it did but the job wasn't right for you.

DO

Job Seeker: "Hi, this is John Smith. I looked on your job board and saw you had three positions I'm interested in.
Job Interviewer: "Hi John, what's the last four of  your social?"
Job Seeker: "1234"
Job Interviewer: "Okay, we've got you in our system. Which jobs are you inquiring about?"
Job Seeker: "Well, the three I'm inquiring about are the Material Handler, Grinder/shop helper and the Final Assembly. I have experience in all three positions but really excelled at and enjoyed the Material Handler position. If I could come in to interview with you and start with that one, that would be great."
Job Interviewer: "Okay, great. We conduct interviews Monday through Friday from seven a.m to three thirty."
Job Seeker: "Great, I'll come in at 7:30 tomorrow morning...thank you."
Job Interviewer: (impressed with your organization and specific job skills and interests)"Sounds good, see you then."
Now the interviewer is happy because not only have you saved both of you time, you've sped up the interview process because she knows exactly what questions to ask based on your experience and interest in the jobs you've inquired about. Now you've created a win-win situation for both of you!
